Anathema

oil painting in progress - Fallen Angel |
Upon giving myself the title of 'Anathema' for the final major, I decided to reflect on my own works and processes that I have used over the course in order to create my artwork. I have compared my own works to those of artists and masters of crafts in order to gain greater depth and understanding of the use of colour, markings, mediums and techniques. They have benefitted my studies greatly, and have been the basis on which I build my final outcome for Foundation Art.
My 'Anathema' project has been a long-winded one, that has changed a lot over the course of the isolation period. With the uncertainty that has occurred, I found it hard to focus on one project to follow through until the end, so have pent most of my time trying to keep myself motivated through creating work that both entertains and challenges me.

oil painting progress - Tyler Joseph |
Before the quarantine had began, I started my first oil painting piece. It was my first experiment with oil which has led to my latest endeavour to create my final outcome in oil. I found that using the medium is quite calming; which I believe I need in this current climate, as I have a longer amount of time to be able to sit and create the pieces that I like.

I've also found that I have less focus on creating larger pieces of work that are fast drying because of this. But I am still working with watercolour as I find it refreshing to use every now and again.

oil pastel process - Tyler Joseph |
Another piece that I have since finished, has been the oil pastel piece above. I previously (like oil paint) disliked the medium due to the lack of my ability to sue it. But over time I have become more accustomed to using it. I like the texture and tone in the piece, and this point initially led me to my oil painting process today.

My Final Project
The 'Anathema' project has evolved from one surrounding the covid-19 pandemic to one that entwines all of my favourite mediums and shall be progressing into a more experimental yet refined approach.
I am currently experimenting with using oil paint, spray painting and previous textural works to create a well rounded piece that expresses my views on the world at the moment.
