Art Foundation 2019-20

Anathema oil painting in progress - Fallen Angel  Upon giving myself the title of ' Anathema'  for the final major, I decided to reflect on my own works and processes that I have used over the course in order to create my artwork. I have compared my own works to those of artists and masters of crafts in order to gain greater depth and understanding of the use of colour, markings, mediums and techniques. They have benefitted my studies greatly, and have been the basis on which I build my final outcome for Foundation Art. Man of Shadows Thinks in Clay The theme I chose to explore for my Final Major was ‘ Music as a form of Immortality ’- essentially the idea that musicians will live on vicariously through the music that they put into the world, accompanied with the idea that someone can have a faith in music that is the same as faith in religion or faith in a political leader. I chose to do this by focusing on Rock music (specifically on Post-Punk and the band Bauhaus as I hold this genre and this band the closest to my heart) as the lyrics, the nature of the music and the androgynous fashion of the time is in juxtaposition to the religious conotations of ‘ imortality ’-it is through this juxtaposition that I want to generate questions surrounding peoples’ belief systems. In the religious teachings followed by my parents, who are Jehovah’s Witnesses, they believe that God will end the world, and that only the ‘ true believers ’ and God’s select few will be chosen to live forever in paradise. What’s going well during quarantine?  If anything, I have been able to have more of a personal connection with my final major project with the theme being on Coronavirus. Being at home, I can have easy access to the news and updated information about what is happening in the world. This primary experience creates a stronger attachment to my comic work as time continues, I have the chance to change and update my comic to make it as current as possible. For example, documenting the fact Boris Johnson tested positive for Covid-19 and that he was in intensive care at the hospital. Keeping things refreshed and updated I feel will document the events of the pandemic well too. I have added more influences and visits into my sketchbook, in particular using the photography work from my trip to New York. Come Along During quarantine, I’ve been using my time to create a final major that promotes an optimistic, hopeful theme of doing what you love and seizing the day. The inspiration came partly from the current Corona virus situation as it’s difficult to feel satisfied with life, so decided to produce an animation allowing me to pursue something I love and look forward to working on. The story follows a character who wants to run away from the toxic people in his life and the mundane nature of his daily life. Luiza I love going fishing. I’ve been sitting by lakes all my life. As an older woman, I’ve found the time you wait by the water is not wasted. The emptiness and the stillness is beautiful. It was never easy for me to do nothing. I grew up in a growing town in Russia, where a great urban movement fuelled a wild desire to work all the time. We thought we would be the best in Russia, maybe the best in the world. Two years of this fever passed, and by that time I wanted to leave. I was young and hoping to see more of my country. I took the opportunity to follow a professor as his assistant to Europe. It was very uncommon, for a girl of little status to travel with an older educated man. After taking carriage after carriage, we took a boat from Albania to Greece. And from Greece we came to Italy. Portraying the energy and creativity of humanity is something that I’ve tried portray in this piece. Energy and creativity are backbones of society and progression, despite being intangible they are worth more than money. In this piece I am representing these abstract feelings through uses of colour and pattern while incorporating the human face. The human face was important to include as it is the symbol of humanity and everything we stand for. The bright colours are used to suggest the bursts of creativity that explode inside ones mind when being expressive, the wave segment is used to embody the constant flow of energy and imagination and also how it is not rigid, it can change shape and morph into other ideas. Foundation Art 2019 - 2020 With the uncertainty surrounding the final exhibitions and overall show of our work this year, this blog has been created to digitally showcase artwork from our time as Foundation students at King Edward VI College, Nuneaton. Every student has their own section, of which can be found shortlisted under the  "Foundation Art 2019-2020"  topic on the homepage. Where you will find a selection of work submitted by each student, encompassing progression, creation and refinement during our extended time in social isolation, to demonstrate that despite being stuck indoors and sheltered from society, we have still managed to push on.
